BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU CLASSES

BJJ, or Brazilian jiu jitsu, is a grappling martial art that uses a range of techniques to get their opponent to the ground, control them, and force them to submit or “tap out” using chokeholds and joint locks.

WHEN YOU JOIN

So you’re thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Gloucester? You’ve come to the right place.

Coach Ryan Graham is part of the world-class Team Draig and has competed in BJJ internationally several times.

But don't let that intimidate you because everyone is welcome to join our BJJ gym in Gloucester. Whether you're a complete beginner or experienced in the sport.

It’s worth mentioning that in BJJ training you’re far less likely to get injured than in striking sports like boxing.

We split our BJJ classes into two individual classes. This helps us focus better on different aspects of BJJ

  • No-gi Jiu Jitsu is a form of BJJ that is practised without a Gi. No-gi, practitioners wear rash guards and grappling shorts instead of the gi, which removes the ability to grip clothing for techniques. This style is more realistic for MMA and relies more on body positioning and control than grips.

  • Gi Jiu Jitsu is the traditional form of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu where practitioners wear the Gi. The gi allows for a wide array of grips and controls, with techniques often utilizing the fabric to secure positions, control the opponent's movement, and execute submissions. The gi is also more realistic for self-defence, as the grips and holds are very applicable to scenarios where an attacker is wearing a jacket.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR BJJ?

For No-Gi BJJ classes, it’s important to a wear rashguard, and grappling shorts or to avoid rashes and burns.

It helps to ensure your fingernails and toenails are short when drilling or sparring with partners, so you don’t scratch anyone.

For your trial class you can wear normal training clothes - Sweatpants and a t-shirt.

Make sure there are no zips or unnecessary buttons on any item for safety reasons. Tie back long hair and bring a water bottle to keep hydrated – you’re going to need it.
